Hi, I'm Mary Duckett.
I lead performance measurement projects for governments, non-government organisations, and companies around the world. I help people make decisions about performance indicators that are right for them, that are achievable, and that stretch them towards the results where they will make a difference in their work.
I want to do the same for you.
I want to work with you to cut through the mystique that exists about performance indicators. I want to help you make good choices about measurement so that you and your organisation develop the right key performance indicators.
In this program, I’m going to give you the same advice that I give our consulting clients in projects where we charge $100,000.
I’m going to be by your side as we talk about strategic issues in measurement, how to use measures to create a high-performing organisation or group, and specifically, step-by-step, how you can develop indicators where you won’t be ambushed and held accountable for results that are unreasonable for you.
When I work with people on performance measurement, it’s exhilarating. It’s like a light turning on in their eyes as people turn to me and turn to each other and say, “This makes perfect sense, and it will work.”
That’s my goal. I want to make a difference in your thinking and in your mindset when it comes to measurement. I predict that you will end up making different choices of performance indicators.
It’s quite possible that you’ll have fewer indicators, and the ones that you choose will be more important and exciting to review because they match up with what you’re really seeking to achieve. The things that get you out of bed in the morning and take you to work. Where you want to make a difference in the world.
One day, I was working with a group at one of our great cultural institutions, a national museum. And the deputy head of that institution turned to me and said, “Mary, you could draw a timeline on the ground, and go up in space and look down, and the things that we are talking about today, and deciding as a result of your guidance, will create visible changes that you could see from far off in space.”
That was amazing to hear, and true.
They consciously decided to achieve quite different results than they had previously been sleepwalking towards. They did different things as an institution because of those exciting decisions. They measured their success differently. They engaged with communities differently. And when I see that, it feels amazing.
I’ve had other clients, community-based organisations, who, in my view, do very special work. As a result of our work on performance indicators, they have been able to develop indicators that clearly communicate to others, including funding bodies, how they are different from other organisations that superficially do the same work. Their key performance indicators and performance reports demonstrate that their results transcend the results achieved by other organisations while being consumer-oriented, grounded in respect, and completely aligned with their values.
This is what is possible when we work on key performance indicators, use good processes, and have the right conversations with the right people in the room.
The material I’m going to share with you is sophisticated and special.
Too often in the past, people have treated key performance indicators as a compliance exercise. There is much more emphasis on having indicators than having the right indicators. There is much more emphasis on going through a superficial exercise and sending a report on indicators and activities to someone else than in using the information to ask questions and explore how to make fundamental improvements that transform performance.
This is the challenge I’m setting you, and the grand prize.
Making sophisticated and nuanced decisions about performance indicators and using them in an empowered and empowering way with others will help you make a real difference in the world. It will help you transform performance, and the experience others have in working with you.
I can’t wait to work with you in this exciting area.
